This article is designed to raise some issues that confront our society.
Newspaper headlines have a number of headlines similar to these. Dramatic increase in bullying in schools. Children in Prep being suspended for poor conduct. The rise of anti-social behaviour in our schools. Popular solutions for these headings include include bringing back the cane, tougher penalties for juvenile offenders etc but do these actually get at the root cause of the problem.
Could the problem be that our society now outsources child rearing to semi professionals and as a result deny the children of the natural nurturing, love and teaching that arises from a good home environment. Not to deny that some children come from homes with significant parental deficits and Child Care is a viable surrogate.
Is the chasing of a selfish lifestyle worthwhile when you are virtually abandoning children as young as 6 weeks to the vagaries of semi skilled workers in a child care centre.
Could these headlines all stem from the notion that children placed in daycare etc who are too young to appreciate the parents motives are suffering from a deep seated feeling of rejection? Is this too unpalatable in our present society?
